The location of Santiago airport in Spain makes it an ideal base for visitors as it lies directly between the dramatic Northern coastlines of Asturias and just a short drive to the border of Portugal meaning that visitors can enjoy the experience of seeing two countries with ease during the same holiday.

When many people think of Spain they immediately associate it with the south and the Costa regions but the North of Spain is a completely different experience and an opportunity to enjoy breathtaking scenery, indulge in the fine traditional food and absorb the differences in culture and ways of life. Fly to Santiago Airport in Spain and experience something new, embracing and exciting.

The Atlantic ocean and shores of the north of Spain provide a mix of beautiful beaches, which are ideal for long walks enjoying nature, and dramatic cliffs and rocks which can provide a show of waves crashing ashore from the rough Atlantic conditions. It´s these conditions that mean that local seafood, or “Marsico” is so famous for its size, quality, taste and texture. Indeed some of the finest seafood in Spain and around the world is brought in from the Spanish trawlers which work these seas.

Santiago de Compostela Tourist Information

This historic City makes an ideal holiday or city break destination no matter what your tastes are. Pilgrims once travelled by foot form all over Europe to visit the relics of Saint James (Santiago in Spain) which were housed in the Cathedral which was being built from 1075 to 1211 and is still standing today after being renovated several times over the centuries – clearly being one of the most visited tourist attractions in the area.

The Cathedral forms the east side of the Plaza de Obradoiro, a large square which represents the heart of the old town and also is home to other historic landmark buildings such as the Hostel de Los Reyes Católicos, the city hall and the Colegio de San Jerómino.

The Camino de Santiago is a world famous pilgrimage trail which traditionally has been walked for centuries and whilst originally starting in France and ending in Santiago, people now walk from all over Spain to arrive at the Tomb of Saint James in Santiago.

Well worth a trip is to the farthest North Western costa of the Atlantic and the “Costa Da Morte” or Coast of death which is the home to many ship-wrecks due to the treacherous sea conditions. The fishing in this area supplies Spain, Europe and beyond and you may even be lucky enough to see the bravery of the local “Percebeiros” (shellfish collectors) who perform breath-taking leaps in the high seas from rocks to rocks, battling with tides and waves to pick barnacles off the rocks. You have a good chance of seeing them working near the cliffs in O Roncudo, a beautiful village with quaint narrow streets and brightly painted houses near Corme.

When you fly to santiago de compostela airport you are only a short drive to the City but of course with a car you have the freedom to explore this vast and beautiful area.
