Traditionally the celebrations are to commerate battles and combats fought between the Moors (or Muslims) and the Christains during the Reconquista period between the 8th and 15th centuries. The people that take part in the festivals are usually in groups or filaes, five of which are Christian (Espanyoletos, Granaderos, Contrabandistas, Suavos, Estudiantes) and four are Moorish (Moros Viejos, Marrocs, Moros Marinos and Mosqueteros). For several days there are parades with amazing costumes which are inspired from Medievil fashion. There will often be horses and sometimes in some parts of Spain the Moors arrive on Camels or Elephants.
There is sure to be a lot of medievil music, fireworks and and gunpowder shots and the celebrations draw to a close with a battle between the two sides.
