Between Calpe and Denia on the Costa Blanca lies the quiet town of Teulada. Teulada is just a short distance from the costal town of Moraira and the two towns are linked by a pine-lined valley and share the same council. A local law limits the height of the buildings in both Teulada and Moraira ensuring that the pine trees dominate the local landscape.

Before tourism became the dominant industry in the town, agriculture was the primary source of income for the people of Teulada. Signs of Moorish occupation can still be seen on the surrounding hillsides where fruits and almonds are grown in walled terraces originally built by the invaders.

Although Teulada has a large expatriate community, the town still retains much of its history and traditions. Fiestas are celebrated throughout the year and every Wednesday morning a street market is held in the town centre.

The historical centre of Teulada is rich with Gothic architecture and historically significant constructions. The part of town has even been officially recognised as an ‘Area of Cultural Interest’.

The centre of town was formally a walled village in order to protect residents from pirate raids. At Plaza de la Creu you can see the ‘Sea Doorway’, the remains of a doorway facing the coast which formed part of the medieval wall.

In the nearby Church Square you will find the fortified Church of Santa Caterina. The renaissance-style church was built towards the end of the 16th century to be both a place of worship and a stronghold in which the townspeople could shelter in the event of a raid by Berber pirates.

Attached to the church is the Chapel of San Vicente Ferrer. Built in the 18th century in a baroque style, here visitors can taste and purchase Spanish Mucatel, the grapes for which are grown on the hillsides surrounding the town.

Between Teulada and Moraira there are a number of walking routes that give visitors the opportunity to see the natural beauty of the area. In the surrounding hills you can walk amongst the terraces that support the area’s agricultural industry or the towering pine trees iconic of the area. From hilltops it’s possible to see nearby towns and villages, including Javea, and the blue waters of the Mediterranean in the distance.

Teulada is around a ten-minute drive from Moraira and around one hour from Alicante Airport and Drivalia Car Rental. For more information on both towns, see the official Teulada-Moraira  website.
