Guardamar del Segura is a coastal town at the mouth of the river Segura in Alicante. With an average of 325 sunny days per year and a pleasant sea breeze it is a popular holiday destination all year round.
Guardamar is a town that has very much been shaped by its location at the mouth of a river. Literally translated, Guardamar del Segura means ‘guardian of the river Segura’ and throughout its history, the town has served as a strategic position for the various cultures that passed through this area. The sand carried by the river and deposited at the coast has lead to the build up of vast, rolling sand dunes along the beaches.
As well as fantastic beaches, there are two large nature parks in Guardamar, Reina Sofia and Alfonso XIII. Both are home to a host of flora and fauna and ideal for a stroll or cycle.
Historically an area for fishermen and farmers, Guardamar still hosts a weekly market where local produce is sold. Every Wednesday the streets are taken over for a large market which has grown to include not just foodstuffs but also clothes, crafts and jewellery.
Guardamar del Segura is a haven for the sports enthusiast. The long coastline hosts a number of watersports including sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing and diving. Back on dry land there are plenty of golf courses to choose from and the Las Rabosas and Municipal Sports Centres have tennis courts, basketball courts, badminton courts and swimming pools.
