Torrevieja’s 58th International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony takes place next week (Monday 23 – Sunday 29 July 2012) at the Eras de la Sal.
The habanera is the name used outside of Cuba for a genre of local dance music popular in the 19th century. This music was brought back to Alicante Province by sailors working on the ships exporting salt from Torrevieja.
This year there will be a total of 22 choirs with some 800 choristers performing in the competition. There will be two entries from Spain: one from Madrid and one from Valencia. In addition 6 local choirs from Torrevieja will perform in the closing ceremony.
Ticket prices start at €3.5 (concessions) and €7 (standard). More information is available from the official Habanera site.
